"Nottingham guitarist Chris Summerlin, aka Last Of The Real Hardmen, dresses up his latest release in the shroud of a Black Metal cover (black design printed on an all black sleeve with a solid black disc to match). But “Darkness” proves to be a somewhat deceptive title.
Instead of the expected blast of six-stringed doom and gloom, Summerlin allows the occasional shaft of white light to illuminate his playing. With subliminal nods to late period John Fahey, Loren Connors and Neil Young’s “Arc”, what emerges from the shadows that he has chosen to hide behind is an album of improvisations that showcase the power and imagination he is capable of.
Feedback, minimalism and distortion are skilfully employed to create sounds that are texturally rich and perfectly structured.
As black as “Darkness” appears on the surface, what lurks within is often blindingly brilliant”
